About Us
KidsDadsMoms was founded in 1983 by Les and Phyllis Minkus, as a result of the experiences they had in raising their own three children and their understanding of the learning and developmental diversity of children. From his experience serving on educational committees in the State of Illinois, Les knew that the individual needs of children was an issue that all families must address. Consequently, he and Phyllis collaborated with several educational psychologists, child psychiatrists and academicians to come up with a practical day-to-day solution. Inspired, they gathered a group of child development experts to jointly work on creating a tool that could assess the individual learning preferences of children. This effort laid the foundation for what resulted in the development of a patented tool called the “Preferred Instruction” process or the “Pi” process.
During the mid-1980’s the structure of the Pi process was developed in a clinical setting, using a diverse range of participating children . Later they recognized that the complexity of the process required a computer program to compatibly match the individual, dynamic characteristics of children to learning products that were specific to their needs. After coding this unique Pi process, into a computer program, they applied for a patent. The patent was granted in 1992.
After receiving their patent, KidsDadsMoms began validating the Pi process with hundreds of families and teachers. In 1994, satisfied with the results, the company began marketing its tool to corporations as an employee benefit, and to pre-schools. Once a company or school adopted this benefit, KidsDadsMoms learning consultants scheduled monthly appointments to provide on-site, individual consultations. They guided parents and teachers in the use the Pi process so they could intelligently select the best developmental products for their children, from our matched product list.
This approach was quite successful on a local level. However, KidsDadsMoms was not able to serve the needs of national companies with employees in different cities...until the advent of the Internet. With the Pi process now accessible from its web site, KidsDadsMoms can provide its services to anyone, anywhere.
